Joey Browner Death: Minnesota Vikings Legend and Ring of Honor Safety Dies at 65
The Minnesota Vikings are mourning the loss of franchise great Joey Browner, who passed away Saturday at the age of 65. His death marks a heartbreaking weekend for the organization, coming just one day after the passing of former linebacker Jeff Siemon.
Browner, a cornerstone of the Vikings defense throughout the 1980s, leaves behind a powerful legacy as one of the most dominant safeties in team history. A first-round pick in the 1983 NFL Draft out of University of Southern California, Browner quickly established himself as a defensive force in Minnesota.
Over nine seasons (1983–1991) with the Vikings, Browner recorded 37 interceptions, 18 forced fumbles, and 17 fumble recoveries across 138 games. His consistent excellence earned him six consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1985 to 1990 and multiple All-Pro honors, solidifying his reputation as one of the NFL’s elite defensive backs.
Former Vikings tight end Steve Jordan paid tribute to Browner, describing him as “one of the best teammates” and a “beacon of positivity.” The two shared the field for nearly a decade, forming a key part of Minnesota’s competitive squads during that era.
Browner played under legendary head coach Bud Grant, who once praised his speed, instincts, and ability to impact any defense. Known for his physical style and sharp football IQ, Browner helped lead the Vikings to the 1987 NFC Championship Game and contributed to the league’s top-ranked defense in both 1988 and 1989.
In recognition of his outstanding career, Browner was named to the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team and inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor in 2013, joining franchise icons like Fran Tarkenton and John Randle.
Modern Vikings star Harrison Smith once credited Browner for helping define the safety position, highlighting his combination of physicality and playmaking ability.
Beyond his individual accolades, Browner was part of a remarkable football family, with multiple brothers also reaching the NFL. His impact extended far beyond the field, remembered for his leadership, character, and passion for the game.
Joey Browner’s legacy as a Vikings legend and NFL great will continue to inspire generations of players and fans alike.
